Ontario Spec Plus Marine Raider Bowie Reviews

If you're looking for a big heavy chopper, whether for clearing brush and doing camp chores, or defending the Alamo, or just for the heck of owning it, you could do a lot worse than the SP-10. Slightly larger (about 1/4 inch longer)than either the Case or Western Bowies, it's quality and workmanship is at least as good, and at only about half the price. Also, its carbon steel blade takes and holds a better edge than those stainless steel models, though with the obvious disadvantage of being more inclined to rust, so you have to keep it clean.About the only bad thing that I could say about the SP-10 isn't really about the knife itself as much as the nylon sheath that it comes with. First off, the material itself will soak up more water than a leather one, a real disadvantage for the before mentioned carbon steel blade, and the knife retention system makes drawing it one-handed very difficult if not impossible, especially when wearing heavy gloves. Leather would be better,... Read more 16 of 16 people found the following review helpful awesome, By This review is from: Ontario Spec Plus Marine Raider Bowie (Misc.) I bought this exact same knife over 17 years ago when I was still in high school. This thing is bulletproof!! It's too big for me to really use a stone so, since it isn't being used to field dress game or julienne cut french fries, I use a regular metal file. Rough on the blade but it can handle it very easily. The powdercoating has chipped a little through rough use, but the damage is very minor. I still cary it on me when I'm going out into the hills after 17 years. The ring for the leg tie broke off the sheat years ago, but theres enough room between the point and the end of the sheath to put a new hole and lanyard. If you're looking for a workhorse knife, this is the one!! 12 of 12 people found the following review helpful A true bowie., By Jakeb Cook "Jakeb Cook" (GA, USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Ontario Spec Plus Marine Raider Bowie (Misc.) The "bowie" style is tossed around loosely for knife categorization nowa days. The truth is, few of them hold true to the classic style with the broad bellied 9'' blades, clipped and upper swept point like this juggernaut. It appears to be bulky from the pictures, but this knife is actually pretty well balanced and feel light and lively in hand. it brings a tactical twist on the Jim Bowie classic. To some the weight might not really make it a great backpacking knife, but more of a carry-in-your-car type of blade. The edge retention is impressive for the price. The handle feels nice, but I noticed after my first outing with it, that the soft rubber had already been scraped up a little bit after what I would consider light use. The sheath is also annoying with multiple stiff snapping straps. There's no getting this knife in or out quickly. The bottom line: Do I love this knife enough to forgive its quirks? I do. Would I buy it again? Absolutely. |
